Barium Hydroxide – Anhydrous & Octahydrate Grades for Industry
Author : Albertine Smith | Published On : 29 Mar 2026
Barium hydroxide is a strong base available in two common forms: anhydrous (Ba(OH)₂) and octahydrate (Ba(OH)₂·8H₂O). It is a white, crystalline powder with high solubility in hot water.
Major Applications:
-
Water treatment: Removal of sulfate ions
-
Lubricant additives: Overbased barium sulfonate production
-
Sugar refining: Removal of molasses impurities
-
Glass and ceramics: Raw material
-
Organic synthesis: Hydrolysis of esters and nitriles
Typical Specifications (Octahydrate, Industrial Grade):
-
Assay (Ba(OH)₂·8H₂O): ≥ 98%
-
Barium carbonate (BaCO₃): ≤ 1.5%
-
Chlorides (Cl): ≤ 0.1%
-
Iron (Fe): ≤ 0.005%
Packaging: 25 kg multi-layer paper bags with PE liner, or 500 kg super sacks.
Safety: Corrosive – causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Use PPE (gloves, goggles, dust mask).
